Show 444: CKUT Radio-Magic Smut Box

CKUT’s Audio Smut Radio Collective presented a sound art installation for Montreal’s Perverscité Festival this past August. They merged queer sex stories, both true and fictional, poems and spoken word pieces, recorded in audio form, or performed live. The results reflect surprising facets of being queer, being trans, memorable moments and empowerment.

Show 443: RANDOM TIME RADIO TIME for radio x

radia season 31 – show #443 (radio x) – RANDOM TIME RADIO TIME
– playing from september 23 to september 29, 2013 –

RANDOM TIME RADIO TIME
by TBC RADIO

time. measure, number and rule. rhythm and beat. synchronization. but what if clocks run differently? if they get out of synch, stop, get rid of the regime of time zones, world time, standard time? what time do they show? and how will those come together, who – knowingly or not – set their time according to them? is it possible that in the end chance provides the only key to synchronize these times from time to time?

RANDOM TIME RADIO examines this complex and at the same time adopts it. its starting point is an on-site research, locating clocks and other timers that are not or not anymore in synch with standard time. together with further time pieces and timers they feed into and become part of an alternate clockwork which in turn uses the medium of radio to the listeners to allow temporary synchronizations with alternate times.
RANDOM TIME RADIO is a temporary mechanism of the TIME BENDING CLOCK, installed for a measured time in halle as part of the ADDICTED2RANDOM radio art festival.

RANDOM TIME RADIO TIME is based on a live radio performance staged at the händelhaus in the festival’s open glasshouse studio, the audible parts being broadcasted in real time by radio corax. while certain elements of the clockwork were set with an archive consisting of compositions inspired by principles of time and/or random as well as various recordings of clocks, the mechanism itself was directed by random and time. there were six channels running in an autonomous random mode, playing each piece full time – but inaudible both for the public and the performer. the signal to switch into listening mode was delegated to special dice (six for the hours, six for the minutes, and six for the seconds), thrown from time to time to insert random time. additionally, during the whole time of the performance astandard mechanical clocks were transformed into (un)clocks.

it is said the original performance lasted for 2 hrs and 20 minutes standard time, which was a pre-set timeslot within the festival. the time frame of radia pieces is 28 minutes standard time. seems like radio has a great potential to become a mechanism of RANDOM TIME. at the same time it is still ruled by standard time. but then what about the sounds set free? listen. listen closely: what time is it? what time is yours? if we all do pass anyway: would you pass it to random? you still have the choice.

TBC RADIO is radio on time.
since summer 2010, TIME BENDING CLOCK RADIO is one of the active mechanisms of the TIME BENDING CLOCK, a research project and tool looking at alternate theories and practices of measuring time, operating at the intersections of art, media, cultural history and the history of science.

Show 442: Cueillette by Luc Kerleo for Jet FM

Jet FM asked Luc Kerleo to invade her studios. Several sound-objects were placed in the offices, corridors, toilettes… Curiosly the broadcast studios were not used. Then some people were invited to visit this exhibition made of artificial noises bursting in those different locations around the studios, playing with its acoustic, its visual ambiency, its context… The result is a 28 minutes radio show where Luc Kerleo explain his work and where you can hear the sounds of the exhibition mixed with the music which was on air at that time and some real noises due to people working in the radio.

from signal to space
Luc Kerleo act as a sculptor. He works with moving and instable things like sound, electricity, mechanical movements, liquids and gaz, thoughts. He mainly works with sound for two reasons. First, compared to visual, sound is a discrete manifestation. One of his preoccupations is to make people feel things without having to recover and hide a part of the reality with objects which blocks up or invade the viewing field. Furthermore by listening reality he develops thoughts and reflexion structures which complete our cultural perception of what surrounds us, this perception which on a cultural aspect is mainly based on the visual. Notably the sounding requires us to consider not only what is in front of us but also, and equally, what surrounds us. But then the stake for him is the same than for artists acting in visual. Since it is about representing what surrounds and constitutes us. History and actuality of visual arts (painting, sculpture, installation, drawings, performances) constitute the territory to which Luc Kerleo refers and in which he moves around. Because they are bridges between thinking and action in reality.

Show 441: Postcards from Italy by Gianmarco Del Re (for Radio Papesse)

Taking cue from Gianmarco Del Re’s column on Fluid Radio, which profiles the most interesting sound artists and musicians currently operating within the Italian electroacoustic scene, musicians Giulio Aldinucci and Attilio Novellino have launched the Postcard from Italy project.
They invited the Aips collective artists to take parte in the project asking them to take field recordings in their own respective cities and areas, which were then redistributed amongst the group on an anonymous basis in order to be reworked and processed.
The resulting sounds ended up being a multifaceted sonic snapshot of the Italian peninsula, articulated into an album to be released this September, a live event that took place in London July21st, 2013 at Café OTO and an installation at SoundFjord.

This Radia Show was then produced by the original inspirator of the whole project, Gianmarco Del Re. He assembled fragments of the compositions included the Aips album, mixed them together with the original field recordings, excerpts from the installation sounds and recordings form the live shows of the Aips collective at CaféOTO and Power Lunches.
The result is a 28minutes compendium of processed sketches from Italy.

Show 440: Hedging the Future by IG sterben (for Radio Helsinki)

In 2012 I – Max Höfler – bought some guns for an Austrian art association called Forum Stadtpark. The purchase of these guns established a situation that focuses on the most abstract entity we do have in our today society and that concerns us all: Money and all these financial issues that are considered as the basic structure of our society. To experience this abstract relation between us and the finance I transformed it into a concrete situation.

To understand the situation which I wanted to establish with this purchase, you have to know three things:
1.) The Forum Stadtpark spent a lot of money for these rifles: 10.000€.
2.) These guns still work. That means that you can still use them and that they had been already used before.
3.) The value of these rifles will rise because they aren’t produced any longer and they are rare. So they are some kind of a financial investment for the Forum Stadtpark as well.

After I bought these guns, I put them into a vitrine in the foyer of the Forum Stadtpark where they still are as an sort of permanent virulent inventory that questions how we can get out of this paradoxical situation.

Now in 2013 three artist – Andreas Heller, Johannes Schrettle and me (Max Höfler) – want to transform this situation into a new form: into some sort of a performance called “IG Sterben”. This performance is subtitled as a musical. Andreas Heller will act as nature in a wheelchair, Johannes Schrettle as love in a jogging suit and me as immanent danger. Furthermore we will form a no band band called “IG Sterben”. Our first rehearsal will be directly at the performance.

In this radia show you will get an insight of this transformational process and you will somehow get to know, what all these things may have in common.
