Show 1008: ZÄRTLICH GEHT DIE WELT ZUGRUNDE: STILL LOOKING FOR MEDUSA by NINA M. W. QUEIßNER & LINDA WEIß

radia season 52 – show #1008 (radio x) – ZÄRTLICH GEHT DIE WELT ZUGRUNDE: STILL LOOKING FOR MEDUSA – by NINA M. W. QUEIßNER & LINDA WEIß – playing from July 22 to July 28, 2024 –

ZÄRTLICH GEHT DIE WELT ZUGRUNDE: STILL LOOKING FOR MEDUSA
by NINA M. W. QUEIßNER & LINDA WEIß

ZÄRTLICH GEHT DIE WELT ZUGRUNDE: STILL LOOKING FOR MEDUSA is a tribute to corals, the sensitive critters of Gaia’s underwater realms, showcasing their profound ability to forge symbiotic relationships. Corals, as holobionts for zooxanthellae, epitomize interdependence; as reefs, they offer shelter to many marine creatures; as strong formations, they modulate the ocean’s ebb and flow into gentler currents. As the ancient ancestors of Medusa, they hold the spirit of nature’s often misunderstood and transformative powers. Medusa herself, a female figure of Greek mythology, represents the recurring theme of metamorphosis and the complex dynamics of power and seduction, banished to safeguard the male gaze.

Through a rich saturation of marine bioacoustics, noise pollution, mythic tones, Nina M. W. Queißner and Linda Weiß beckon you to immerse yourself in the deep, dark blue soundscape. Here, lose your way, welcome the feeling of otherness, and give yourself to the waves of yearning, and acknowledge cold shivers. Picture Medusa, whose symbiosis sustains the life that thrives beneath the waves.

underwater sound recordings: Coral reefs (Red Sea, Egypt), shipping traffic on the Main River and the English Channel of the Alabaster Coast; additional sound recordings: Baking soda in water, hot oil, ice cubes, crystal glass and water, tadpoles, rain on polyamide, etc., synthesizer, melodica, Sansa.

NINA M. W. QUEIßNER adopts a poetic and research-oriented approach using recording technologies and soundscape composition to explore the experiential dimensions of sound and listening, closely integrated with multidisciplinary concepts of landscape and environment. LINDA WEIß creates immersive installations that examine the dynamics of shared spaces, engaging in dialogue with more-than-human collaborators such as fungi and bacteria. Together, they work on the ongoing project LOOKING FOR MEDUSA that invites audiences on a journey through past and future mythologies. Starting with Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the project weaves together references from cosmologies and ecosystems to create an experimental habitat for speculative future coral creatures. Their audio-visual installation was first exhibited at the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 2023. Follow their research on tempe-corals.tumblr.com

Show 929: UNTIME THERAPY – THE ART OF DETUNING by TBC RADIO

UNTIME THERAPY: THE ART OF DETUNING
by TIME BENDING CLOCK RADIO

There is a saying: Time heals all wounds. Which is not true anyway. But even worse: what if time itself makes you sick?

Indeed, there are many time-related illnesses with a broad spectrum of symptoms to suffer from: from paranoia to trauma, from mania to depression, from light vertigo over heavy nausea to complete breakdown under the massive pressures of time. So you feel unruly, sleepless, tired and still breathless? Or over-excited, stressed and still bored? And/or completely out of synch?
Well: this is probably due to some unhealthy intake and/or experience of time.

Perhaps you have already asked yourself: what can I do? Is there any remedy, a therapy for me? How can I tune in and synchronize again, to be in time and in harmony with time?

So what should you do? Or are these the wrong questions anyway? Let us find out…

Please note: This transmission is not to be confused with a therapy session or any other kind of therapy-related psychic or psychoanalytic treatment. It deals with alternate artistic perspectives on the subject matter.

TIME BENDING CLOCK RADIO
is radio on time. Since Summer 2010, a series of radio shows is being produced as part of the TIME BENDING CLOCK project, a transdisciplinary research in the fields of art, media, cultural history and the history of sciences on theories and practices of alternate methods and techniques of clocking time. TBC RADIO encompasses a variety of formats and shows in German and English language. TBC RADIO is produced by GUNSTradio.

Show 905: ERRANT WAVES IN ARCADIA by GABI SCHAFFNER for radio x

ERRANT WAVES IN ARCADIA
by GABI SCHAFFNER

Frequencies permeate our life-world on all levels.

They can be abstract, unfathomable, they can lurk at the threshold of our hearing, they can be extremely figurative or even plainly obtrusive. They can be soothing, piercing, alarming, beautiful, awe inspiring, familiar. Once in a blue moon they come along single, as one clear tone, more often they huddle in clusters or patterns. Frequencies sail like clouds along the horizons of our perception. They rain on us. And they sneak into the deepest layers of our brain, where they conjure up memories or feelings or both.

As a series of life-world-frequency vignettes, “Errant Waves in Arcardia” assembles varied notions of mimicry, dirt, duration and osmosis.

LOST ORIGINS
by GABI SCHAFFNER

A journey along the subtle outlines of a fragmented map made up of sounds, signals, songs, chimes and rhythms
From a Buddhist monastery to bird calls to wandering drones, this piece is all about tracking and breaking the kinship between natural and man-made frequencies.
The curtain of time, woven from the thin fabric of oblivion, is sewn together by bumblebees and sewing machines alike, and its hem is embroidered with the song of cicadas and the sound of one hand clapping.

Show 814: RADIO ECOLOGIES – LOST IN TRANSMISSION by KATE DONOVAN & GABI SCHAFFNER for radio x

radia season 45 – show #814 (radio x) – RADIO ECOLOGIES – LOST IN TRANSMISSION – by KATE DONOVAN & GABI SCHAFFNER
– playing from November 2 to November 8, 2020 –

RADIO ECOLOGIES – LOST IN TRANSMISSION
by KATE DONOVAN & GABI SCHAFFNER

RADIO ECOLOGIES
… is a Radio Art piece by Kate Donovan, 2020, with narration by Molly Donovan Higham.
In this piece, radio is acknowledged as a natural as well as a human-made phenomena, that is interconnected and active across species
and scales. The work asks: How does an expanded perspective impact our imagination of radio in the future?

In the beginning, there was radio.
Some say that there was a quickening, and that the Earth’s core bubbled and burped to release the egg, and that the soft, brittle egg cracked to release the worm – the double worm of two entwined in one – to let it slither out and go underground, to disperse through all the elements and up through the aether, burrowing down and emerging up at the same time.
But the sun and rocks and stars know that there was radio even before that.
And nuclear waste (among other things) will go on to tell our more-than-human successors that there will still be radio, even then.

LOST IN TRANSMISSION
… is a collaborative piece by Kate Donovan and Gabi Schaffner; editing and sound design: Gabi Schaffner.

How can we conceive of an expedition in non-territorial terms? Can we read the signals of our ecosphere? What if a reed turns out to be an antenna? Kate Donovan and Gabi Schaffner venture into the water retention basin of the Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin: at times an idyllic lake, sometimes a swampland the size of a football field, this body of water fluctuates between effective area and dreamscape, biomass and place of retreat.

KATE DONOVAN
is a practicing radio artist, facilitator and researcher based in Berlin. Her artistic practice deals with radio in an elemental sense, in terms of frequency, transmission and interconnectedness (but also disruption and interference). Her editorial and organisational work in free and community radio fosters inclusion and experimentation.
Recent and current projects include: Datscha Radio 17, a garden radio art festival on the future of the garden in the Anthropocene; ‘The Bespoke Headpiece’, a speculative telling of radio history which was developed during a transmission arts residency at Wave Farm in 2018; and the ongoing radio show ‘elements’, which broadcasts monthly via CoLaboRadio, on FM in Berlin and Potsdam, and online.

GABI SCHAFFNER
works as an interdisciplinary artist in the field of visionary documentation, poetics and sound art. Traveling forms a vital part of her artistic practice – as a source for sound and language recordings but also as “a rite of passage” enabling the artist to explore alternative narrative structures. Her works in the field of sound and radio art have been broadcast internationally, including commissions by Deutschlandradio, SWR, ABC Australia and many more. Besides radio she has realized site-specific projects and exhibitions in India, Australia, Iceland, Spain, Finland, France and, most recently, Taiwan. Her collaborative project Datscha Radio – of which Kate Donovan also forms part – won the Award of the Berlin Network of Free Project Spaces and Initiatives 2019.

Show 787: Post-Pop Meta-Vision by Igor Štromajer for radio x

radia season 44 – show #787 (radio x) – Post-Pop Meta-Vision by IGOR ŠTROMAJER
– playing from april 27 to may 3, 2020 –

Post-Pop Meta-Vision
Proto-Algorithmic Pseudo-Songs

by IGOR ŠTROMAJER – intima.org (2020)

“It all starts with the sound of the modem connecting…

There are seven songs, proto-algorithmic pseudo-songs. The music is all computer generated, lyrics are sung by a computer – and this is of course also the case with the Swedish moderator guiding us through the Post-Pop Meta-Vision experience…

Before each song the computer voice announces:
Låt nummer ett: ×kX‹-+Ô[ô |Ń‚xăö9
Låt nummer två: ×›lëśßwp^Ů ßc W
Låt nummer tre: -ľH°¦Y˙7y=¹^=Q _-Můě
Låt nummer fyra: éOŁs=•üVz˙ Ľ‚;z—xľ,?
Låt nummer fem: 9熰¬ý3÷ °¬ 1É ›‘i
Låt nummer sex: Hh…og“mS~ÍÖθŐZ»
Låt nummer sju: Éc Ö=ě ŢĘS÷…O‚ ü

At the very end, the computer voice quotes Marx’s 11th thesis on Feuerbach, also in Swedish: “Filosoferna har bara tolkat världen på olika sätt, men det gäller att förändra den. Karl Marx.”

I chose the Swedish language because – for me personally – the Swedish language is a synonym for the ESC, the Eurovision Song Contest. But I wanted the whole thing also to sound serious: to have the ESC touch, but inside a very serious, almost classical atmosphere. That’s why there’s not much other sound effects (besides some short beeps and gongs), so that the main focus of the listeners can be put on the music, on these seven weird, a bit dark, post-Brechtian and meta-punky songs…”

The Dog That Licked Up A Star – Orchid Mix
by GABI SCHAFFNER

“The Dog That Licked Up A Star – Orchid Mix is a radiophonic suggestion for deceleration. The composition features (among others) a singing dog from the town Hengchun, in the South of Taiwan. While I sat in the patio listening to his voice, a cloud passed. The other afternoon I sat under a tree next to the lake of Luan and recorded short wave radio in the rain. The dog and I also went up to Maokong mountain in a gondola where we met with Mr. Hu and the Orchid Lady. On the way down we noticed something glittering in the mud. It was a tiny star.

Recordings for this piece were made in: Treasure Hill Artist Village, Bamboo Curtain Studio and Maokong mountain in Taipei; Yilan, Yilan District; and in Hengchun and Hengchun Folk Museum, Houbihu and Longluantan, Pingtung District, South Taiwan.

Mr Hu is the eldest inhabitant of Treasure Hill Village. 93 years old, he likes to study books on the history of China and he loves to sing to the ladies. Translator: Catherine Lee, director of Taipei Artist Village (TAV).

Margaret Shiu is the founder and artistic director of the Bamboo Curtain Studio, an ecologic artist residency in Tamsui, New Taipei. Excerpt is taken from our ‘Plum Tree Talk’, February 2019.”
