Show 359: Radio Readings

free103point9’s contribution to the Radia network comes from a fundraiser for its FM station, WGXC, last summer, with “Radio Readings” from Max Goldfarb and Brian Dewan, Alison Knowles  and Hugh Dancy.

The readings, in order of appearance:

• Artists Max Goldfarb and Brian Dewan produced this “reading” of Velimir Khlebnikov’s The Radio of the Future (1921) in 2011. A canoncial text, “Radio of the Future,” may be the first real conceptualization of transmission art.

• Alison Knowles is a visual artist known for her soundworks, installations, performances, and books. She was a founding member of Fluxus, and recently Knowles offered her iconic performance “The Identical Lunch” to museum visitors as part of the Museum of Modern Art’s Performance Exhibition Series. On the occasion of a summer garden party benefit for free103point9’s FM radio station (WGXC). Alison Knowles performed one of her “Bean Turners,” constructed from beans and paper, Bean Turners and are both book pages and sonic instruments.

• At the same summer garden party, acclaimed film and stage actor Hugh Dancy, performed F.T. Marinetti and Pino Masnata’s “La Radia” (1933) a visionary text, if one that reveals the authors proclivity for Fascism. La Radia asserts what The Radio Must Not Be, what The Radio Abolishes, and what The Radio Will Be.

Show 358: Oramic Radio Sounds by TEA FM

The School of Creative Radio TEA FM from Zaragoza has developed a new radio documentary based on the works and sounds made by Daphne Oram (Dec 31th 1923 – Jan 5th 2003) British composer and electronic musician. She was the creator of the “Oramics” technique for creating electronic sounds.
Developed in documentary form, we will cross the sounds created by her “Oramics Machine” and we will talk with people close to her and her work.

In 1959 she installed her Oramics Studios for Electronic Composition in Tower Folly, a converted oast house at Fairseat, near Wrotham, Kent. Her output from the studio, mostly commercial, covered a far wider range than the Radiophonic Workshop, providing background music for not only radio and television but also theatre and short commercial films. She was also commissioned to provide sounds for installations and exhibitions. Other work from this studio included electronic sounds for Jack Clayton’s 1961 horror film The Innocents, concert works including Four Aspects and collaborations with opera composer Thea Musgrave and Ivor Walsworth.

With the voice and talent of:
Isabel Aparicio, Daniel Canelo, Mar Gonzalez, Manuel Alcaine, Miguel Deza, Reyes Casasnovas and Carlos Berdiel

Music & FX:
Daphne Oram, TEA FM FX gallery, BBC and MEC Sound Archive

Script and production:
Chuse Fernandez

A TEA FM production. Recorded on TEA FM-CTA Studios on January 2012.

Show 356: CROATAN N17 by Lucas Crane & Angela Moore

A radio play about inter-dimensional dropouts, alien refugees, and going cosmical
native created during a residency at worm, december 2011. Weird orbs beacon from the swamp, surprises abound in the forest, confusion reigns. But were they swallowed forever by the abyss or except its invitation willingly? Recorded in and around the shipyards of Rotterdam and in the forests of Barcelona while protests of awakening raged in New York City, this dream sequence of cut-ups meditates on the state of the traveller, stranger, seeker, and pilgrim foraging for oneness with a radically shifting psychic environment.

G Lucas Crane is a sound artist and sound performer working in the medium of
analogue tape and obscured, recovered memories in the digital age.
Angela Moore is an artist working in sound and video with focus on the mythical
and mystical.

Show 355: Life and Death of Arissat-1 by Reni Hofmüller

Reni Hofmüller for Radio Helsinki (Graz, A)

On August 3rd, 2011, Arissat-1 was launched directly from the ISS, the International Space Station. NASA TV broadcast this life over the internet, and thousands of people worldwide watched the deployment, and after that followed the first amateur radio satellite launched from a vehicle in space. After only a short life time, Arissat-1 was heard for the last time on Jan, 4th 2011. As we are going to undergo a similar procedure with mursat1, regarding a shortlife time, and very short and quick passes over head, Arissat-1 was a good way to learn about satellite spotting.

Recordings used: deployment, recorded at ESC im LABOR on Aug 3rd; Arissat signals received at the amateur radio groundstation, Graz, in August 2011; coallision – a realtime audio visual installation by Jogi Hofmüller, a sonification of debris parts from a coallision from 2 satellites in 2009, and Juri by Peter Venus (both shown at ESC during steirischer herbst 2011), Raumsonde Venus-Wega, Performance by Peter Venus and Marian Weger at musikprotokoll 2011, Windsong by Reni Hofmüller, at musikprotokoll 2011; excerpts of KraftiM – Criguere, found on Jamendo.

Show 353: Suono Fuga by Annie Dunsford

What is the relationship between identity and sound?
In sound, can we discover/ invent/ lose our selves?
How does art make us feel when we experience it and create it? –does it disassociate us from ourselves, does it localize us, does it allow us to recover/rediscover our selves ? Do we feel nothing? Do we feel alienated from the art itself?
Is experiencing art and sound an experience of alienation or discovery?
After the experience of art, are we unchanged?

The intention of Suono Fuga is to both alienate the listener from themselves and from the sound, then return them to it. The sonic adventure is thus an adventure of departure and a return, a loss of self and a rediscovery of self through sound.

Show 352: Empire(s) by Luke Munn

Mark No. 76344794: “the sound of a brass bell tuned to the pitch D, but with an overtone of D-sharp, struck nine times at a brisk tempo, with the final tone allowed to ring until the sound decays naturally. The rhythmic pattern is eight 16th notes and a quarter note; the total duration, from the striking of the first tone to the end of the decay on the final one, is just over 3 seconds.” Owners of Record: NYSE GROUP, INC.

Taking its cues from the long-duration film of the same name, this work takes a 2 second audiomark registered by the New York Stock Exchange and slows it drastically to 28 minutes. The opening bell and energetic trader shouts are brought to a standstill and become instead a dirge of white noise and ringing drones which replace motivation with malaise.

Luke Munn is an interdisciplinary artist based in Berlin with work focusing on sound, new-media and social engagement, using the body and code, objects and performances to activate relationships and responses. His projects have featured in the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Electrosmog Festival, Resound Falmouth, and Q-O2 Brussels with commissions from Aotearoa Digital Arts, Creative New Zealand and TERMINAL and performances in Paris, Dublin, Chicago, Berlin, Auckland, and New York.

Show 350: Magic Sound Mountain

On July 23rd, 2011 CKUT’s  Magic Sound Mountain Collective made a furtive ascent of Mount Royal and found a spot along one of the less trodden foot paths through the forest where they installed 6 hand made speakers that were used to diffuse multi channel sound compositions for the forest dwellers, invited guests and nature enthusiasts who happen upon the installation while enjoying a hike through the mountain.

Members of the  MAgic Sound Mountain collective:
Nicholas Estherer
Nathatly Arraiz
Tony Vaughan
Liz Pieries
Andrea-JAne cornell
Dominique Ferraton
Fjola Evans
Emanuelle Majeau-Bettez
Alanna MAcnevin
Taking the frequency and brightness of sound limitations imposed by the small speaker systems that was built by the Collective members, each member composed a piece for the forest. Recordings were made during the diffusion of the Magic Sound Mountain in the forest and were remixed with the sound pieces to create an over view of the Magic Mountain experience.
DESCRIPTION OF AUDIO PIECES

Invisible Audio: Nature is becoming invisible and is replaced by visible disposable products. For the piece, speakers will be put in and around a fake tree placed in the middle of nature.  Fabricated or Real ? Machinery or Humanity? Questioning the role of us as a community where nature is becoming a commodity in neighborhoods to suit the trends and needs of the current generation.  “are we taking a step back? forward? cycle.” This piece was created by t+l (television longplay). Tony and Liz are instruments from the magic sound box. They are sound artists mixing electro acoustics, music, spoken word and radio together.
Forest Singing: The forest sings, and as it shifts from natural to digital, can you tell who is out of their element? By Nathaly Arraizdescribes herself as being between a sound artist and a sound tech; she likes to observe, interpret and create.
“3 dialogues” (excerpts): This is a demonstration of some of Generic Media Group’s work in the field of nonspecific audio. Hundreds of dialogues from various films were analyzed to create a statistical model of contemporary conversations. From this model, excerpts from 6 dialogues were rendered. Generic Media Group provides services for those in need of nonspecific audio, video and text. Current projects include setting up clients with internet radio stations that offer unlimited access to guitar solos, sad music and domestic dialogues.
Internal natural buzzing: Fjola Evans is a cellist and sound-arranger living in Montreal, Canada.
piwiwounnnwooowoounnnng: Field recordings of native North American forest creatures mingle with foreign species. Bird song, whispers, spring peepers, Cicadas cicadas, electronic interventions, wind in the trees, and tambura. 4 channel piece, by andrea-jane cornell. Andrea-jane makes ambiances ferroviare-aquatique, clochettes-tiques, oiseau hydrophone, grenouilles grouillant with objects and field recordings.
Rules of Nature: An excursion in the wilderness, a walk in the woods: what freedom, what a complete detachment from the structure of our everyday lives. But is this really how it feels?  Our behaviour in these “wild” spaces is often so controlled that our actions are even more organized and limited than usual, by Dominique Ferraton. Dominique spends much of her time wandering in empty lots, knitting mittens, winding film in old cameras and creating sonic quilts made of found sounds and field recordings.
Echoes from the Lincolnshire Poacher/Somewhere in the Western Desert: Two pieces in one. This piece uses field recordings, recorded instruments, recordings from The Conet Project, and a poem written by E.Y. Barnard, Lieutenant entitled there was the richness…. The poem was taken from Poems from the desert (1944), a collection of poems written by fighting men in the Eighth Army. The poem was translated and recited by Jacinthe Dupuis(French), Ali Gorji (Arabic, not included in final edit), and recited in English by Neil Griffith; they all deserve a huge thanks! Alanna Cecelia Jean MacNevin enjoys finding sounds and source materials that delight her and utilizing these materials to explore the process of making a variety of art.
