MP Hopkins’ Page 38 (language wrinkles) is an exercise in spatially-decentred radiophony and poetic indeterminacy. It builds an intimate architecture of Hertian space in order to interrogate and unravel ideas of the broadcast voice as one-way transmission, setting in motion a series of ellipses and feedback loops. Using radio as both medium and method, a page from an evolving text score the artist has been writing since 2018 is vocalised and sent into the aether, an open-ended process incorporating several mediating techniques that work sequentially to further multiply and distribute: live FM radio improvisations that function as feedback systems rerouting signals through multiple sources that emerge again, transfigured, within the same on-air broadcast; low power FM transmissions and spatially-located arrays of small receivers channelling playback through an echo-chamber of domestic activity, the artist recording his own listening-to and listening-with. Anna Friz, in her 2009 essay Transmission Art in the Present Tense, writes of contemporary transmission art practice’s consistent interest in polyvalent transception, stating that “a transceptive approach to transmission is not only a statement (“I am”), but also an orientation toward active, engaged listening: a question asked, however conditionally (“who’s there”)? Transmission is understood not only as a radial description of space, but a circle of relationship.” Echoing this approach, MP Hopkins writes of Page 38 (language wrinkles), that “My intention was to confuse the time and space of when the work began and when it was being heard, a blurring of transmission and reception, (…) my role as the one transmitting and receiving was meant to be somewhat collapsed into a repetitively revised action where speaking and listening to that activity was simultaneous; talking with/to/through myself via the radio whilst also listening to myself and re-recording that – a transceiving activity.”

Show 876: Malgrado col tempo si sfaldi by Stefano De Ponti (radiopapesse.org)

Stefano De Ponti, texts, soundscapes and electronics

David Ryan, voice and clarinet
Eleonora Pellegrini, voice

Produced with the humble support of Radio Papesse.

Through a non-linear dramaturgy of sound, the soundscape composition Malgrado col tempo si sfaldi  – Although, it falls apart over time – retraces and rewrites the numerous chapters of multi-layered project La natura delle cose ama celarsi – The nature of things loves to hide, an ongoing research musician Stefano De Ponti has been dedicating since 2019 to the dynamics of massification and accumulation in musical creation and fruition, confronted with the inevitable  impermanence of everything.

The poetic imagery and material peculiarities of pietra serena – a gray-blue sandstone used extensively in Renaissance Florence  – form the backdrop to a multi-media transient fresco, where planning and the randomness of events coexist, in which process and work overlap until they merge.

Malgrado col tempo si sfaldi is a composition born from Stefano De Ponti’s notebooks and from the research materials and intuitions gathered during his field investigations at the Nardini sandstone quarry in Vellano, Tuscany. It brings together and organizes a wide range of thoughts and sketches, by aiming to value the craft and relational aspects of the process that unfolded between the quarry environment, Nub Project Space in Pistoia and the Tempo Reale research centre in Florence.

Stefano De Ponti (Milan, 1980) is a musician and sound artist. He collaboratively works with theatre companies and visual artists and this plays a decisive role in the construction of a diagonal poetic vision, incline to exchange and hybridization practices between techniques, languages and different levels of perception.

You may find Stefano’s texts, quotes and references also on radiopapesse.org.

Show 875: scant_intone_winter_volute by Constantine Katsiris (radioart106)

Since April 2020 I have been going through the archives, my back-up hard drives, and revisiting old projects. Since the world seemed to collectively hit pause, the pandemic provided an opportune moment to take stock of the past. Presented here are two early works, recorded while I was studying audio at college in Southern Ontario during 2001 and 2002. It was around this time that I had mostly thrown away my conventional methods of making music, the bulk of which up to that point was created on computers with module trackers and other shareware. I was a few years deep into both hardware synthesizers and field recording, and I was in search of new processes and techniques for working with sound without the rigidity of programming on a grid.

The programme for this half-hour broadcast consists of Winter [21m53s] and Volute [6m20s]. The first piece was recorded during a blizzard as I sat inside a warm recording studio in Stoney Creek. I watched the snow come down for hours through the big windows while I programmed the Nord Electro all day. The second piece is an electric meditation of resonating fields and buzzing wires that was recorded in my apartment at the Victory Building in Hamilton. It was among my first forays into recording static, magnetic noise, and other such sources as sound material. I hope that these pieces from 20 years ago provide a unique listening experience.

Constantine Katsiris has been a composer of experimental electronic music for nearly three decades. An avid phonographer, he has conducted field recording expeditions around the world from urban settings like Prague and Paris to more remote regions such as the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. His compositions have been broadcast to listeners around the world from Concertzender Nederland to MTV Brasil. Katsiris has brought his live performances, installations and fixed media works to many notable venues, such as La Société des Arts Technologiques [Montréal], Whitechapel Art Gallery [London], Brut Konzerthaus [Vienna], and SESI Art & Cultural Center [São Paulo]. He is also passionate about showcasing, broadcasting, and disseminating sound works as a curator of exhibitions and concerts for galleries and festivals, as a programmer on community radio, and as the director of the Panospria record label for sonic experimentation.

Show 873: Night construction (Radio Student)

Night Construction is an improvised acoustic image that went on air in the night.  Acoustic atmosphere that was made with physical things in the studio (accordion, paper, books, autumn leaves, xylophone, pipe, marbles, glass, fruit,…) was inspired by texts of known (Danilo Harms, Dostojevski) and unknown authors or participants.  Construction material was on air dematerialised and transformed into a sonic landscape. The show in its entirety. Radio Študent Radia.fm programme curated by Urška Savič.

Show 872: BLACKBODY, WHITE NOISE by Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson for Wave Farm

Writes Robinson, “BLACKBODY, WHITE NOISE is an experimental radio art composition. For an entire week, while in residence at Wave Farm, I collected sounds using two vacant cast iron cubes and sound reproduction technology. Each structure bore a single hole (a Blackbody) allowing sunlight to penetrate and radiate throughout the interior space. During the course of the residency I recorded thermal conduction, movement, and ambience. I manipulated the collected data to compose a sonic relationship with excerpts from La’Vender Freddy’s Sunscreen Conspiracy project. The title Blackbody, White Noise is inspired by Frantz Fanon’s highly acclaimed literary work, Black Skin, White Mask. This project set out to reveal and translate a relationship between the light of the Sun and the struggle against forces determined to control it. The resulting meditation articulates a historical conflict, thereby leaving the listener to reimagine a new future inspired by a new solar narrative.”

Show 871: IN MEMORIAM. RAYMOND MURRAY SCHAFER by TEA FM

Revered Canadian composer and author R. Murray Schafer has died Aug. 14 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease at age 88.

Regularly described by colleagues as a man of extraordinary innovation and communicative ability, Schafer was one of Canada’s most prominent composers.

His works reflected an interest in myth, ritual, audience participation, and ecology and environmentalism’s aural elements. His best-known works were large, ambitious outdoor pieces that incorporated elements from the environment as an integral part of the performance. Examples include The Princess of the Stars that premiered in 1981 by New Music Concerts, and Music for Wilderness Lake, written for 12 trombonists spaced around a lake.

Many of his ideas were informed by a lifelong fascination with the “soundscape”, a term coined by Michael Southworth, and popularised by R. Murray Schafer in his influential book The Tuning of the World, published in 1977.

The book followed the World Soundscape Project (WSP), which he founded while teaching at Simon Fraser University in 1969. “[WSP grew out of Schafer’s initial attempt to draw attention to the sonic environment through a course in noise pollution, as well as from his personal distaste for the more raucous aspects of Vancouver’s rapidly changing soundscape,” writes colleague Barry Truax.
