An action of collective practices with the Mutual Assistance Group bringing together people concerned by psychiatry (Léo, Parenthèses, Gem Marseille and Sentinelles-equality), with whom we have experienced many ways to take sound and listen in several gardens of Marseille.
The sound library made with several hands was staged and sound during a public restitution in the garden of the convent Levat by Julie Rousse, JB Imbert and Nelly Flecher.
Bruit Confus on Radio Grenouille (88.8 Marseille, FR) founded in 2018 by Billy Guidoni explores deviant and extreme music in all of its forms: noise rock, harsh noise, psychedelia, math rock, experimental, industrial, post-hardcore, free rock, no wave, post-punk, black metal etc. The CCDM (Collectif de Contre-déterminisme Magique) created in 2019 by Peter Hart, also a host on BC, organizes regular free improvisation concerts in randomized ensembles with more or less 90 musicians from the Marseille underground scene.
These two agents of chaos grew up together and continue to inspire one another. In each episode of BC, the presenters engage in a short sound improvisation of around three minutes (called the Improv Sequence) with musical instruments or objects found at home or on site.
Over the past seven seasons, they have developed their unique sound during this collective ritual that has become a kind of project of its own.
Recently, Radio Grenouille’s technician, Alex Papi Simonini, searched the archives to make a sound collage of the greatest moments from the Improv Sequence. This special episode gives a glimpse of an ever-evolving creative dialogue.
Bruit Confus & CCDM – Séquences Impro
Bruits Confus sur Radio Grenouille (88.8 Marseille, FR) fondé en 2018 par Billy Guidoni explore la musique déviante et extrême dans toutes ses formes : noise rock, harsh noise, psyché, math rock, expé, indus, post-hardcore, free rock, no wave, post-punk, black metal etc. Le CCDM (Collectif de Contre-déterminisme Magique) créé en 2019 par Peter Hart, également animateur sur BC, organise régulièrement des concerts d’improvisation libre en ensemble aléatoire, il regroupe plus ou moins 90 musiciens de la scène underground marseillaise.
Ces deux agents du chaos ont grandi ensemble et continuent de s’inspirer l’un l’autre. Dans chaque épisode de BC, les animateurs proposent une courte improvisation sonore d’environ trois minutes (appelée la Séquence Impro) avec des instruments de musique ou des objets qu’ils trouvent chez eux ou sur place.
Au cours des sept saisons, ils ont développé leur propre son lors de ce rituel collectif qui est devenu une sorte de projet à part.
Récemment, le technicien de Radio Grenouille, Alex Papi Simonini, a creusé dans les archives pour faire un collage sonore des meilleurs moments de la Séquence Impro. Cette émission spéciale donne un aperçu d’un dialogue créatif en constante évolution.

Petite bascule d’été nous fait entendre un moment fatidique, celui du crépuscule d’un jour de juillet, vers 21h.
Alors que les cigales font place aux grillons, que l’activité des humains se referme et le fond urbain s’apaise, 28mn de bascule sonore où le moment s’apprécie, alangui de chaleur, mais serein d’éternité.
Sachez apprécier ce moment, dont l’estompement final ne se conçoit qu’en miroir de son début flamboyant.

« En 2010, les Fralib, ouvrier·es de Gémenos, ont lutté contre la fermeture de leur usine quand elle appartenait à la société multinationale Unilever. Le site, déclaré non rentable et sujet à une délocalisation en Pologne devait cesser son activité.
Unis, les Fralib ont lutté âprement durant 1336 jours – plus de 3 ans et demie –, physiquement et juridiquement, pour contrer cette fermeture et reprendre l’usine sous forme de coopérative. Ils gagneront en 2014. La SCOP est toujours sur pied à ce jour.
A partir d’un travail de terrain commencé en 2018 et mené sur le long terme, j’ai pu collecter des sons dans ce milieu industriel et tisser des relations serrées avec les personnes qui y travaillent. Leurs trajectoires sont venues construire un destin collectif singulier dans l’histoire industrielle.
En puisant dans ce terreau à forte intensité sonore, en menant des interviews de terrain, j’ai souhaité livrer une lecture personnelle d’une histoire ancrée dans la lutte et l’émancipation. »
Création au Festival Futura 2021, reprise à Longueur d’Ondes 2022.

In 2010, the Fralib, workers of Gémenos, fought against the closure of their factory when it belonged to the multinational company Unilever. The site, declared unprofitable and subject to relocation to Poland, was to cease operations. United, the Fralib fought hard for 1336 days – more than three and a half years – physically and legally to counter this closure and take over the factory as a cooperative. They will win in 2014.
The SCOP is still on its feet to this day.
From a field work started in 2018 and conducted over the long term, I was able to collect sounds in this industrial environment and build close relationships with the people who work there. Their trajectories have come to build a singular collective destiny in industrial history.
By tapping into this high-intensity soil, by conducting field interviews, I wanted to give a personal reading of a history rooted in struggle and emancipation.
Premiered at the 2021 Futura Festival, retaken at Wavelength 2022. Next broadcast: March 26, 2022, with acousmonium in-situ in the factory (Biennale des Écritures du Réel), in partnership with Radio Grenouille.
The starting point is a series of “sound” dances proposed by the dance students: voices, body percussion, slides, steps,… Then, the microphones recorded the dancers’ movements at different heights (micro contact, ambient stereo microphone and proximity stereo microphone).
The selected extracts were played in the multimedia creation software of Pure Data.
A random and mastered arrangement that follows rhythmic intentions so that this sound piece can be danced again.

Le point de départ est une suite de danses « sonores » proposées par les étudiantes en danse : voix, percussions corporelles, glissements, pas, … Puis, les micros ont enregistré les mouvements des danseuses à différentes hauteur (micro contact, micro stéréo d’ambiance et micro stéréo de proximité). Les extraits sélectionnés ont été joués dans le logiciel de création multimédia de Pure Data.
Un agencement hasardeux et maitrisé qui suit des intentions rythmiques afin que cette pièce sonore puisse à être dansée à nouveau.
Une composition de mouvements à partir d’une écriture chorégraphique sonore. Une chorégraphie invisible.
Création issue de la résidence de Radio Grenouille-Euphonia à l’UTLN, Mer Invisible, soutenue par l’Université de Toulon et la DRAC PACA pour favoriser la rencontre des artistes, des œuvres et des étudiants au cours d’une résidence de création artistique.
La Pulpe est une sororité de recherche-création cristallisée autour d’Aurélia Nardini, Lola Dubus, Ludmila Postel et Crys Aslanian. Ielles transposent les pratiques de patch propre au plateau radio à l’échelle d’un groupe d’improvisation électronique et narrative. Maléfiction est le fruit d’un patient travail d’écoute et de pratique collective lors d’un temps de résidence à l’Atelier-Studio d’Euphonia en 2020. L’une des membres jouant à distance en streaming, Maléfiction est un appel longue distance témoignant du désir de jouer ensemble et d’aller de l’avant malgré le 1er Confinement.

La Pulpe is a Creative Research Sorority crystallised around Aurélia Nardini, Lola Dubus, Ludmila Postel et Crys Aslanian. Together they transpose the patching practice of the radio set into a groupe of electronic and narrative improvisation. Maléfiction has been patiently brewed up after hours of collective listening and practe during a residence at Euphonia Marseille. By including one of its member playing remotely, Maléfiction is a long distance call reflecting the desire of playing together and moving ahead despite the 1st Lockdown.

« Sounds of silence » est une anthologie réunissant certains des plus intriguants morceaux de silence de l’histoire de l’enregistrement et comprend des pièces d’Andy Warhol, John Lennon, Maurice Lemaître, Sly & the Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, John Denver, Whitehouse, Orbital, Crass, Ciccone Youth, Afrika Bambaataa, Yves Klein, etc. Si tous ces morceaux ont en commun un même et unique matériau, et peuvent en cela paraître au premier abord interchangeables, ils sont en réalité on ne peut plus divers. Ainsi, oscillent-ils entre le performatif, le mémoriel, le politique, la critique, l’abstraction, le poétique, le cynisme, la blague, la technique, la promotion, l’absurde et l’indéterminé. Les morceaux choisis de cette anthologie rendent néanmoins tous compte de la spécificité de silences pensés et produits pour un médium reproductible, jouant de sa matérialité en le mettant à nu. Ils exposent et révèlent leur médium, jusque dans son usure et ses imperfections. Ce sont de simples surfaces, des spirales de sillon tournant sur elles-mêmes. Pour cette même raison, ces plages de silence se distinguent de la rupture conceptuelle opérée par John Cage avec 4’33’’. Depuis les années 1950, le silence a trouvé une place dans l’économie du disque et a connu d’innombrables appropriations. La plage de silence paraît en effet ne faire exception à aucun courant musical. « Sounds of silence » rejoue ces silences d’après leur support d’origine, conservant toutes les imperfections liées à leur matérialité propre et leur histoire spécifique, sans toutefois négliger le postulat d’une certaine satisfaction d’écoute chez l’auditeur. Cette approche documentée révèle les motivations effectives ou présumées de ces silences, tout en s’aventurant dans des correspondances ou des interférences inédites. Un disque « à jouer fort » (ou non), en tout lieu et toute circonstance : une réelle expérience auditive.

An anthology of silence pieces from the records history. Sounds of Silence is an anthology of some of the most intriguing silent tracks in recording history and includes rare works, among others, by Andy Warhol, John Lennon, Maurice Lemaître, Sly & the Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, John Denver, Whitehouse, Orbital, Crass, Ciccone Youth, Afrika Bambaataa, Yves Klein, etc. In their own quiet way, these silences speak volumes: they are performative, political, critical, abstract, poetic, cynical, technical, absurd… They can be intended as a memorial or a joke, a special offer, or something entirely undefined. The carefully chosen silences of this anthology are intrinsically linked to the medium of reproduction itself and reveal it’s nude materiality. They expose their medium in all its facets and imperfections, including the effect of time and wear. At the most basic level, these silences are surfaces. And it is in their materiality that they distinguish themselves from the conceptual experiments of John Cage with 4’33”. From the 1950s silence has found a place in the economic structure of the record industry and since then it would increasingly be appropriated by a vast array of artists in a vast array of contexts. Indeed, the silent tracks seem to know no boundaries. The LP presents the silences as they were originally recorded, preserving any imperfection that the hardware conferred upon the enterprise, without banning the possibility to satisfying the ear. The liner notes provide historical background for each track, revealing the stated (or presumed) motivations for these silences, while providing novel sound correspondences or interferences. This album is meant to be played loud (or not), at any time, in any place: a true aural experience.
