Show 125: Point Radiant by Radio Free Robots

Radio Free Robots transmits from an uncertain future and Point Radiant is a reception in packets which we can’t clearly understand before we can sort them. Point Radiant is the accidental recording of a field of crossed and untidy transmissions, all coming from the same place but emitted at various moments. All of this looks like rough information, like an alternate logic that seems to be intended to us (those robots speak our languages). No matter the time we’ll need to comprehend, our simply human ears can decide for the moment that it’s only music.

For its 10th contribution to Radia, Grenouille asked Radio Free Robots, a collective of robots who live robot adventures in an “uncertain future”, make radio shows for robots in which they discuss robot issues. Radio Free Robots also produced shows and pieces for Epsilonia (Radio Libertaire), Radio Day festival in Amsterdam, performed live in Le Placard and Cannibal Caniche festivals, on Taxi Blind and Radio 404 webradios, made installations in City Sonics in Mons, Belgium, and Visual Arts Center in Hong Kong.

Show 113: R(H)umeur collective, part 2 / Relax! (we are a democracy)

This program is composed of 2 pieces : R(H)umeur collective, part 2, Maki’s contributive project, and Relax! (we are a democracy) by Floriane Pochon and Etienne Noiseau.

R(H)umeur collective is based on a call for participation which Maki opened to artists and friends around the world, asking 1 minute audio pieces he then mixed all together.

The first part of R(h)umeur collective was broadcast on the Radia network on March 2007. The second one is composed of contributions from :

Show 101: R(H)umeur collective, part 1

R(H)umeur collective is a radio piece initiated by Maki for Radia. The original idea of this programme is a “versus” to Sarah Washington’s Time Labs project: she built a radio show with numerous one-minute audio pieces she received after launching an open call via the Internet.

R(H)umeur collective started with a similar call for participations through the Radia network and more widely. The main difference with Time Labs is that Maki included each contribution in its entirety without any other transformation than mixing them all together. It resulted in 2 radio pieces.

This programme is the first part of R(H)umeur collective. The second one will be broadcast in the Radia network and replayed live from the sound-art festival Laps in Main d’oeuvres, Paris, in May 2007.

Show 090: ma[Marseille] by François Parra

François Parra usually uses sound as a structural material ofdevices and interactive installations. Thus he’s more familiar with relations between sound and space than with composition.

This time for Radia listeners, he conceived a trajectory-piece whose title, ma[Marseille], sounds as a series of singular points of views on the city where he lives – and maybe as an ironic reference to MySpace?… This stammering title also calls into question what one means with that word: Marseille has become a product as well, a trademark, that local decision-makers are selling – some would add ‘cheaply’.

ma[Marseille] is a work on the meaning of the words through how they sound. François captured melody, phrasing and accent in inhabitants’ voices and returned them into a musical form. In counterpoint he processed disembodied synthesis voices. His composition questions the words that have been pinned on his city. Actually, Marseille has for ages and from all sides been covered with words, images and legends, always contradictory and continually renewed.

Show 068: Hymne aux scories

Hymne aux scories (literally Anthem to scoriae) is made of plundered European nations anthems, spoken words and noise generator. Hymne aux scories is a kind of photographic DIY: snapshots that would look at each other, stolen and ready for transformation.

According to Eva Jacobi, “This is concerned with what have now left us: a paradoxical essence of the phenomenon of communication _and always-renewed disorder. These radiographic pictures come from the best and the worth, so as to present fictive but very living acts.”

Eva Jacobi is Olga Tüdjnik’s harpist – a duet with Fabrice Cesario. Olga Tüdjnik consists of the preparation of a material which has been elaborated in the course of a stage process through theatrical acts. It is an important source of the noise generator used in the making of this program.

Show 064: Histoire d’eau by Christophe Modica

Christophe Modica is a photographer, filmmaker and sound artist.
He made a piece ignoring the borders between countries, treating as equals language and sound, music and voice, as a water sound doesn’t need a translation. There is no secret “Histoire d’eau” is a work on water. Water feeds, washes, it can lack or overflow. Drought kills, so does a tidal wave. With the current, from ebb to flow, through health, hydration, struggle and waste, life is in a floating balance.

Show 054: Fabrice Cesario by Fabrice Cesario

Here is the fresh and up to date contribution from Grenouille to the RADIA network.
Sorry for the delay but the program maker’s first child being born on 7 April came to disturb the normal development of Art!

The sound material for this program was recorded during 3 impro sessions where program maker Fabrice Cesario (multi-effects, radio, tape, whistling tube and solo analog synthesizer) invited other fellows. At first he played with Olivier Maurel (cello, multi-effects, FM and HF radio). Then joined Andy Bolus (homemade audio switch) and Erik Minkkinen (pitched voice, 80′s electronic drum) – this 4-person band was named ‘Phantom Power’ for this occasion (Andy insisted). The last session was a set by ‘Olga Tüdjnik’: a duet with Eva Jacobi (voice, toys and sound files). The program is a result of an editing of this material (recorded at each time on multi-tracks) with parsimonious addition of Fabrice’s solo performances.

Fabrice Cesario attempts to free music from the word ‘free’ – that has been a label among others which format and level music. He wants to put weight on the other scale of the machine.
About this program, Fabrice says: “My music happens at the very moment I’m making it. What you can perceive in this radio program is not exactly the music I made: it is an ‘écorché’ (a cutaway – litterally ‘skinned’ in French) in the same way you won’t see life on anatomy boards.” So, let’s make it music anew by experiencing its listening!
