Show 311: Different Looks At Experimentation by YHT

YHT : concepts of experimental sound design for cinematic
audio-experiences and Francois Sallé with Tatsumi Ryusui : free live
experimentation with instruments and electronics between Noise and
Ambient

YHT is an artistic project in the field of electroacoustic sound
experimentation. Having worked together for 6 years now, the two
artists Claus Störmer and Johannes Krause from Halle/Saale can look
back on a large number of different projects. The spectrum of their
work encompasses free sound work and experimental short film scores as
well as radio plays. They regard their sound compositions as being on
the edge of film and its narrative and imaginary character.

This compositional and aesthetical point of view is reflected in their
piece “RE”, a combination of recorded live performances and produced
radio plays. With structure-borne sound converters which have been
attached to metal plates and with several field recordings, real and
computer-generated rooms have been brought together. As a consequence,
the listener perceives sounds which can either be recognized or not.
The intention is to establish a listening experience at the
intersection of realness and fiction.

The second part of the show will present the current project of two
artists living in Berlin. Francois Sallé (France) and Tatsumi Ryusui
(Japan) bring together their vision of experimentation – each in his
own way: Ryusui by playing guitar in his very own style, Sallé by
contributing field recordings and computer-generated sounds.Their
teamwork yields very intuitive performances with constantly different
progression and character.

Show 309: Raw Audio Recording #1 by Gabi Schaffner

RAR – Raw Audio Recording #1
Gabi Schaffner/rawaudio/interdisciplinary artist

In my work, I try to encourage communicaton, non-hierarchic perspectives and sharing. This is why I like the amalgamation of
different media and the experimental shift of identity into/between different cultures. Within this frame, field recording is treated as a carrier of cultural concepts, just as (documentary) photography is a carrier of visually encoded cultural messages.

“Otto Möto” deals with the lost and found-again archives of Jyväskylä-born motor engine researcher and modern composer Martti Mauri (1935-2003). Experts herald Mauri’s avantgarde compositions as a forerunner of techno and new media music. And yes: This is another concept album by rawaudio. The track broadcasted, „ Otto Mötö“ , is based on fieldrecordings of Finnish motor (environment)s and was edited by Martin Moritz, Hamburg. This is NOT the final version!

Show 217: 18 Minutes by Kevin Malone

Klubradio presents the work of music and sound designer Kevin Malone. In this series, Malone presents Fast Forward, 18 Minutes and Changing For You. Fast Forward, a string quartet of obsession and velocity leads into 18 Minutes, a concerto for two double basses and string orchestra. 18 minutes is the amount of time that elapsed between the collisions of the World Trade Center towers in New York City on September 11th, 2001. The voices heard on this piece provide the pitches and rhythms of the melodies. They are the spontaneous exclamations of people who witnessed the collisions.

Show 188: It’s a Money Party – a global youtube election redux

It’s a Money Party – a global youtube election redux, brought to you by Berlin Backyard Radio. Featuring excerpts from youtube remixed news and comedy, presented by the circus runaways.

This is a youtube mashup of the most popular videos generated around that global media circus called the American Presidential election. Guests include Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, comedians and journalists. Of course, some comments made it into the mix. As the election is nearing an end, this is a little slice of the cacophony of media that made its way onto your only global video sharing site. One day, the runaways hope to make it home to Europe.

Show 143: A Radiotale of 2 Walls by fran ilich

In “a Radiotale of 2 walls’, a Mexico city girl runs away with her boyfriend towards the North, but is stranded in faraway Tijuana where she explores the possibilties of crossing the border, making a strange friendship with a shady waiter at the trashy Avenida Revolución (the street of perpetual spring break), a woman of Juárez who reappears as a ‘ghost of internet past’. She’s trying to escape from her past life, her family and trying to start anew, but in the process discovers a new border world full of casualties, contradiction and stories. The character discovers slowly that the people whom she tought of as ‘criminals dealing in the border’ are humans, victims of nationalistic socioeconomical agendas, not unlike the people surrounding the drama of the Berlin Wall and the Germany of the Cold War years.

Radio-novela is the immediate antecessor of the latin-american soap opera (telenovela), and even though is a genre based on audio, it hasn’t completely disappeared, even if it’s not as strong as it used to be decades ago. Sagas would last for years, something which to this day, not even telenovelas are able to achieve. But latin american Telenovelas have crossed the borders and oceans not only into eastern europe, africa, and middle east, but into the us and europe, and in the case of Ugly Betty: a half-breed sitcom/telenovela, just the fact that is not a traditional melodrama inadvertently comments the fact of mexicans migrating into the u.s. become something else: a detail that major latin-american entertainment conglomerates haven’t been able to target with their nationalistic and traditional approaches.

This production was comissioned by Diana Mccarty for Berlin Backyard Radio and it’s a serialized fiction paying hommage to Charles Dickens “A tale of two cities’, which was originally published one chapter at a time in english newspapers. Directed by fran ilich, with several actors including Adriana Segura.
