Show 755: A night in Letea by Toni Dimitrov (for Kanal 103)

At the end of Jun of 2019, a group of sound artists went on a 2 weeks trip to the distant village of Letea, at the Danube delta in Romania. The purpose was to records field recordings and soundscapes of this remote place and experiment with them. After a flight, a long trip with bus and a trip with a boat, we put our stuff at a back of a truck and head towards Letea on a sandy and bumpy road. There was nothing much in this place except vast wetlands, frogs, lots of mosquitos and of course sounds. Lots of sounds. Exactly what we needed for our purpose there. The days were very hot and humid, but also quiet, and not much interesting sound wise. Opposite to this, the nights were full of mosquitos, but also noise that was appearing immediately after the sunset. The complete darkness full of stars was perfect for recordings these soundscapes. The forest, the wild horses, frogs, mosquitos, the boat trips, the Lipovean babushkas and the rich quietness of the Danube Delta were the true leitmotif of our stay there.

At one point at the end of our stay we also did 24 hours open channel at LOCUS SONUS, preceded by a live radio show, presenting stories and glamorous raw recordings in a broadcast from our beautiful traditional wood house. We opened the microphones installed on the straw roof, on the South border of the village, by a small and charming channel of the Danube, full of wildlife positively expressive at that time of the night and day, for the listeners to dive into. This is a small part of what we were listening to those days at Letea.

Recorded and produced by Toni Dimitrov during Sonic Future Residencies in Danube Delta, 2019, organised by www.semisilent.ro.

Show 699: “What is existence?” by Martin Anastasovski (Kanal 103)

What is existence?
Existence is what?
Is existence what?

Martin_Anastasovski

A woman of errant composure trudges on a tiled walkway, head bowed forward, eyes peering down. She is looking for discarded, half-smoked cigarettes. She has to, in order to endure Existence.

The 35 year old skateboarder says, “this is the only thing I have,” and kicks his foot forward to send the wooden plank rolling on the platform.

The call to prayer resounds, cutting the blocks of stale air that have become lodged between the building blocks. To put thoughts into people’s heads is the meaning of existence for the navigator of the minaret.

The hot car rolls down the street. The bicycles hit the subtle bumps on the track, bells ringling involuntarily. The person in the doughnut and coffee store winks his eyes few times, at a long interval, while the droning of the machines is filling the ambiance with the stuff of sound frequencies.

The river of existence coils into a vortex, and uncoils again. Who is in the eye of the vortex? Do my eyes help move this thing or does it exist on its own.

Show 662: Architecture & Time (Kanal 103)

Artists interested in field recording and related musical practices are invited to a five day Audio Workshop “Architecture and time” in Stari Grad on island Hvar in Croatia headed by the musician and artist Schneider TM. The workshop took place in towns music school located in the Biankini Palace – Stari Grad Museum. Over a period of 5 days the participants explored the two parameters of architecture and time with the aim to translate them into music /soundscapes / audio pieces. Both topics were reflected in sound. One aspect is the architecture of the city itself and the other is the architecture of sound structures, whether it is a soundscape, sound art or a song. The aspect of time can be taken as history of the city, but also as linear sound produced by the use of architecture like reverb / resonance or by playing with the material structures of found architecture, formed by certain spacial specifications. The final works were presented in a live session in the museum´s garden. This is a short presentation of that presentation.

Show 612: Life Fragments in 11 Movements by Jared Sagar (Kanal 103)

Concept:

Each movement is a moment, a place in separate time. All the sequences have been placed together in order when they were first originally recorded. These sounds are all found in our world. Some natural, some man-made.
They are mostly, apart from one or two, all field recordings, everyday sounds of the forgotten, music that we choose to ignore or music that just passes through and hides within our subconscious.
I have altered these recordings and given them a new life, new breath.

Mixed and Mastered in my kitchen on a Monday morning.
Jared Sagar

Bio:

Jared Sagar is a composer from the United Kingdom. He specialises mostly in the experimental genre mixing drone/ambient/minimalism and abstraction together. Show 535: Easter (Kanal103)

konjsko

We had several spare days for the Easter holidays, so we went to small town Resen and Prespa Lake. There was still snow on the mountains around, on Baba and Galichica, but here the day was sunny and bright. There are several nice villages around the lake and we took long walk from Stenje to Konjsko. The others went to the near monastery, but i went to the small beach of Konjsko. On the way down to the beach there was a huge dump, the results of the civilization. Obviously it was done by the people of the village. Whenever they go to the beach they have to pass by it. And of course nobody was doing anything about it. Reminding us of our civilization and its consequences.

I set at the sand near the water and was listening to the birds that were flying or diving into the water. There are lots of endemic bird species nesting around on the bay and on the near island. I started playing with the shells and the cane branches. Was relaxing and meditative. The water drops, shells, cane crackling… Birds were singing… making me forgot about all that was surrounding me.

This is an audio story of this day, written through recordings done on the small beach of the village Konjsko. This is an audio story about nature, but also about our civilization.
